There are many techniques you can use when doing colorguard. Every type of flag has different moves to use with it. The 5 and 6-foot flags are used more often, and  many different moves can be done with them. You'll need to know some basic starting positions  before you start to work on moves.

Starting Positions:

Right Shoulder~ This is the main starting position. You hold the flag in front of your body and have it standing strait up. Your left hand will hold the butt (bottom) of the flag and needs to be level with your belly button. Your right hand will be right under the silk (cloth) of the flag. Now you can do many basic moves.

Left Shoulder~ Left shoulder is the same as right shoulder except your hands are switched. Your right hand will hold the butt of the flag level with your belly button, while your left hand is positioned under the silk of the flag. Now you can do basic moves using your left hand.

Right Slam~ Hold the flag horizontally in front of your body, even with your belly button. Have the silk of the flag pointing to your right. Then, with your right hand, tilt your flag down to ground. Your left hand will be up by your neck holding the tip of the flag pole and your right will be right under the silk.

Left Slam~ Hold the flag horizontal to your body, but this time point your silk to the left. Have your left hand under the silk and your right hand at the end of the pole. Tilt your flag down to the ground with your left hand.
