Middle school students are teachers
From the Bluejay Newsletter, November, 2003

What are those middle school students doing in the elementary school? They're tutoring elementary kids in math, science, social studies, art, and English.

Experts say the best way to learn is to teach someone else. That is exactly what Julie McDonald's sixth graders are doing one hour a day as a Service Learning project. Service Learning gives students opportunities to help in the community while developing attitudes of civic pride and civic responsibility.

Last quarter, Ms McDonald's students conducted a study of unsafe driving in Mancos. They found the worst place for speeding violations is Grand Avenue at 3:30 p.m. when school lets out.

Ms McDonald has been invited to the Civics Academy in Denver where she will tell other educators about her students' successful traffic project.
