Superintendent Letter

  • July 6, 2020

    Dear Parents/Guardians:

I want to update families regarding the 2020-2021 school year. My administrative team and I met on Wednesday, July 1, to discuss our reopening plan, using the most recent CDE guidelines as well as feedback we received from the recent DAC Survey.

As of today, the plan, contingent on local health department guidelines and the Board of Education approval, is to open school and have in-person instruction beginning August 17, 2020. Due to the COVID-19 Virus, we have a new normal in how we live our daily lives, including the school day. I understand there is a certain level of risk every time we leave our homes, and enter a public setting. I know and respect the fact that there are a wide range of beliefs, understandings, and opinions people have regarding the COVID-19 Virus. However, my job is to make sure when students are here at school, we are doing everything we can to minimize the level of risk to students while they are in school. Managing this risk is a partnership between the home, families, local health departments, and the Mancos School District. In order for us to come back to in-person learning, every listed partner above must do their part. Please note, the statement, “...the plan is to open school and have in-person instruction beginning August 17, 2020” does not mean we will be opening as we did last fall. COVID-19 has produced a new normal. In the next few weeks, we will be sending out protocols for daily arrivals and departures, food service, transportation, recesses, passing times, and other logistics. Also, for any of our families who feel uncomfortable coming back to school for in-person instruction on campus, please reach out individually to your building principals. We will be providing a rigorous, online academic program through Colorado Digital Learning Solutions at no cost for those families feeling uncomfortable coming back to school for in-person instruction on campus.

I appreciate your patience during these unprecedented times. As a district, our focus is always on the health and well-being of our students, their social/emotional well-being, as well as their academics. Balancing all of those during this “new normal” is challenging and simply takes time to figure it all out. I am confident that whether you choose in-person learning, or on-line instruction, we will be able to provide our students the highest level of education our families have come to expect.
