House Bill 08-1021 created the opportunity for Colorado administrative units to
accelerate highly advanced gifted children under age 5 for kindergarten and/or under age 6 for
first grade.
San Juan BOCES School Districts will offer early access to kindergarten or first
grade in the upcoming school year to support students who are evaluated to be exceptional in
aptitude/cognitive reasoning, academics, school readiness and motivation. The purpose of early
access is to identify and serve the few highly advanced gifted children who require
comprehensive academic acceleration and is not recommended for the majority of 4 or 5 year
olds.

Applications will be reviewed by a San Juan BOCES Early Access team, and families will be
notified of the decision on or before June 1st.
