School Board Elections are just around the corner! Would you like to know more about becoming a member of the Mancos School Board? This link is full of information regarding what a school board member does and how to become a candidate. 

Dear Community Member,

We are excited about your interest in serving on the Mancos School Board.  Being on your local Board of Education is an important service to your community and the work is extremely rewarding. It is the Board’s job to ensure that every student will graduate with a broad academic foundation which enables each to demonstrate the skills of critical thinking, problem solving, teamwork and independent judgment. In partnership with our community, we will foster safe, positive, and rigorous learning experiences. Below are some key dates and responsibilities to help you understand the scope of work and responsibilities.  This is a just introduction to prospective candidates.  Please contact Board President, Pam Coppinger pcoppinger@mancosre6.edu, with any additional questions.

Key Dates

August: Call for Open Board Seat Nominations (8/9/23),
September: Candidate Petitions Due (9/1/23), CASB Regional Meeting (9/27/23)
October:  Candidate Forum, CASB Fall Conference & Delegate Assembly
November: Election Day, Oath of Office, District Open House, District Thanksgiving Lunch
December: CASB Annual Convention and Board Retreat (12/7/23- 12/9/23 Colorado Springs, CO)
February: Linkage Presentations
April: ELC Open House, District Open House
May: Graduation (May 19th)
Summer:  Staff/Board Retreat and/or Board Retreat – One day in June and one day in July

Conduct

  • An individual school board member has no individual authority. 
  • Board members are expected to be familiar with the agenda for each meeting or work session and prepared to discuss any items on that agenda. (be prepared)
  • Each member of a board has an equal right to be heard on matters of concern to the Board (free expressions of opinion).
  • Provide objective counsel or criticism in a constructive manner (meaningful conversation).
  • Participation and discussion in meetings should be carried out in a responsible and ethical manner.
  • Decisions should be based on the available facts, open discussion, and your independent judgement.  Do not surrender your judgement to individuals or special interest groups.
  • Respect confidentiality.
  • Once a Board decision is made, stand behind it despite any personal misgivings.
  • Support the superintendent when he/she is carrying out the policies and directives of the Board.
  • It is not the responsibility of a board member to become directly involved in the operations or administration of the district.
  • Avoid being placed in a position of conflict of interest; refrain from using your position for personal or partisan gain.
  • Don’t engage in public embarrassment.
  • Your greatest concern must be the educational welfare of the students.
  • Not adhering to this code of conduct may result in censure. *
